A new clinical space for NHS Fife's Community Midwifery team has been created with support from Fife Health Charity, transforming an unused storeroom into a welcoming environment for patients and staff.
The newly refurbished room at Victoria Hospital was developed in memory of Liz Farmer, a much-loved member of the Community Midwifery team, following a large donation from her family to benefit the service she worked in and cared deeply about.
Community midwives play a vital role in supporting women and families throughout pregnancy, birth and the early weeks of parenthood, providing expert clinical care, health advice, emotional support and guidance.
Following the loss of their colleague last year, members of the Community Midwifery team wanted to ensure that the donation received from Liz's family was used in a way that would benefit both staff and patients while reflecting her significant contribution over many years to the service. The team developed a plan to transform an unused storeroom into a dedicated space where confidential conversations and appointments could take place, benefitting both patients and staff.
Liz’s family members were involved in elements of the design, including the selection of decorative window films depicting Forth Park Maternity Hospital where Liz spent much of her career, helping to create a fitting tribute to Liz's memory.
With additional funding support from Fife Health Charity, that vision has now become a reality. The room has been fully refurbished to create a comfortable, welcoming and private space for women and families accessing community midwifery services.
The new facility will support a wide range of clinical and supportive conversations, helping to improve the experience of care for women and families while providing the Community Midwifery team with a dedicated space better suited to their needs.
Liz was a much-loved colleague whose loss was felt deeply across the team. We wanted to ensure that the generous donation made by her family was used in a way that would have a lasting impact and continue to benefit the service. This new room provides a welcoming and confidential space where we can support women and families at important moments in their lives. We are grateful to Liz's family and Fife Health Charity for helping us bring this project to life.
Mark McGeachie, Charity Director at Fife Health Charity, said: "We are proud to support projects that make a meaningful difference for patients, families and staff across Fife. This project has transformed an unused space into a valuable resource while also creating a lasting tribute to a much-valued colleague.
"It is a wonderful example of how charity funds can be used to enhance care environments and leave a positive legacy for future generations of patients and staff."
