In today’s digital world, people are increasingly managing many parts of their lives online. To ensure everyone can access the support they need, it has become important for Physiotherapy services to offer more digital ways for patients to stay connected and engaged. Modern technology now provides far richer and more flexible opportunities for patient involvement than traditional printed exercise sheets ever could.
By introducing this new system, the service is helping to reduce health inequalities and making it easier for people from all backgrounds to take part in their rehabilitation. The visual and pictorial tools within the system offer gentle encouragement and make exercises easier to follow. They are especially helpful for children, older adults, people living with learning disabilities, those recovering from strokes, and anyone who may face communication or memory challenges.
This resource also helps the service better support people who have lower literacy levels or for whom English is not their first language. Having the option to use a mobile app and track progress can be a powerful motivator, helping people feel more confident and supported throughout their recovery.
The new system was launched in December 2025 for all NHS Fife Physiotherapists. Early reports from January 2026 show that around 2,000 people across Fife benefitted within just five weeks. The service has also developed meaningful measures to help demonstrate the positive impact this digital approach is having on patients’ rehabilitation journeys.
Patients living with long-term conditions are rising, with obesity, lifestyle factors and reduction of physical activity contributing to poorer public health in Fife. Physiotherapy services are uniquely placed to bridge the gap between health, social care and leisure services, which can improve and enhance the lives of the people of Fife.
