The mural was created with our paediatric patients in mind, offering a gentler, more welcoming environment as they make their way to theatre. In practice, every patient benefits from surroundings that feel less clinical, and the calm, whimsical seascape provides a soothing distraction during what can be an anxious moment.
“Following the Fish” is introduced during a child’s pre-operative visit to help them understand the journey to theatre, make the setting feel more familiar and ease their worries about going to theatre.
Funding from Fife Health Charity made it possible to complete the mural in the Phase 3 theatres and to refresh the older artworks, repairing chipped areas and applying a durable matt varnish. These improvements ensure the murals continue to be a much loved, colourful and comforting feature for all who pass through the theatre complex.
It’s been wonderful to see smiles on children’s faces as they follow the mural toward theatre, using its colours and characters as a gentle distraction. Now that the artwork is fully completed, it feels intentional and welcoming, and the new varnish means it will stay bright and beautiful for years to come. The project finished ahead of schedule with no disruption to theatre activity, and I have to admit—my favourite part will always be the axolotl and the purple haired mermaid.
