Social prescribing awareness session delivered to Levenmouth Primary Care staff.
Council and NHS Health Promotion, Community Led Support and Locality Planning teams delivered a dedicated Social Prescribing awareness session aimed at GPs and other practice staff members in the Levenmouth area. Fife Health Charity supported this event by funding the room hire and refreshments after a bid was made GP from the Airlie Medical Practice working with the Cluster Lead for the area, both of whom are great advocates of social prescribing.
Social prescribing helps by connecting people to non‑medical support that truly makes a difference. This might mean joining a befriending group, taking part in a community garden or getting help with debt or benefits. It could mean trying an activity to support physical health or accessing dementia‑friendly groups that help people stay socially. These ‘prescriptions’ keep people connected and reduce the need for more medical interventions such as prescription medication. It’s about improving wellbeing, building confidence, and changing the circumstances that can make people unwell in the first place.
The protected learning time session covered both what is meant by Social Prescribing is and crucially it covered the Fife offer of social prescribing, offering GPs alternatives to traditional medications.
The benefits for patients, communities and primary care staff were also explored as were the barriers and opportunities in their own practice. Each participant identified one practical action they will take forward. These will be revisited in a follow‑up delivered directly to practices next month.
The event also provided valuable time for networking and meeting social prescribers and local services across Levenmouth. Funding from the Fife Health Charity enabled the session to run face‑to‑face and allowed the team to offer refreshments.
This was hailed as an initial positive step in strengthening the team’s collective approach to Social Prescribing and improving support for people in Levenmouth.
